Relationship Woes

Funny how the mind finds things to stress about! If it’s not your work and whether you should leave it to pursue something more fulfilling, it’s definitely your relationship.

“Is this healthy? Is this what I want for my entire life? Did we like each other WAY more before being quarantined together?”

The truth is, your partner annoys the hell out of you sometimes. But other times, you feel fate had a hand in the relationship. The Facebook status “it’s complicated” finally makes sense.

Hashtag Pandemic Life

And, even though you’re used to #pandemiclife by now, it still really eats at you!

Remember when you could go out with friends, share the chips and queso, and de-stress over frozen margaritas? No masks. No obsessive hand sanitizing. Socializing was relaxing!

Now, it’s hard to “get away” when you are literally at home all the time.

When you think about the Coronavirus, a sense of dread comes up.

“What if I get it? What if I pass it on to my family? If I see my friend, am I being reckless? Will I lose my job because of the pandemic? When will life be “normal” again?”

No wonder it’s hard to sleep sometimes, and you feel plain STRESSED.

With the pandemic fears, it feels like there’s no escape. Everything has a risk. You wonder, “Sure, I could get a pedicure, and that might feel good. But is it worth the risk?”

Time to DE-STRESS

Learn to Chill Like Margo

You could say that Margo* was uptight when she started sessions. She always had to be early to everything, prepared, and she freaked out if things didn’t go as planned.

And then the pandemic happened. Nothing went as planned! Margo stressed about whether she’d lose her job, even though she hated her job. She worried about herself and her family. Sometimes it felt like she couldn’t breathe – PANIC.

In the session, Margo realized specific thoughts would trigger her anxiety. She learned how to say no to anxious thoughts. They were still there, but she could choose not to go with them.

Margo talked about her fears in sessions. It turned out she had a massive fear of uncertainty. She realized it makes sense that the pandemic has been so hard on her since it brings up tensions.

In time, Margo started speaking kinder to herself. She tried out new calming activities AND practiced being more flexible.

Now she knows how to handle stress better and how to relax. Life is still challenging, and anxiety can even come up, but she is no longer afraid of feeling paralyzed by it. She embraces life in all its joy and challenges.
